Ways to Relieve Stress and/or Anxiety - Managing Your Time

Avoiding stress:
Stress is a part of life and you canít avoid it. But you can try to avoid situations that cause it for you and you can control how you respond to it. The first step is to know your own coping strategies, you could use a stress journal to record stressful events and note down how you respond to them and how you coped. After you know what is causing your stress, try making some changes in your life that will help you avoid and cope with stressful situations, like manage your time, looking at your lifestyle and getting support

Looking at your lifestyle

  1. Find a balance between personal, work, and family needs.
  2. Look at how you spend your time, there might be things that you donít need to do at all.
  3. Have a sense of purpose in life.
  4. Get enough sleep.
  5. Try to adopt healthy habits, eat a healthy diet, limit how much alcohol you drink, and donít smoke.
  6. Exercise if possible.

Getting support

  1. Family and friends.
  2. Co works, or people you know through hobbies or other interests.
  3. A professional counsellor or a support group.
  4. Employee assistance programs at work, or stress management classes.

Managing your time

  1. Prioritise tasks i.e. write down your tasks for the week, then rate these tasks by how important or urgent they are.
  2. Control procrastination, structure your time, and break up large tasks, create short-term deadlines, avoid perfectionism.
  3. Manage your commitments, like letting go of some of your commitments that are not that important and make some new commitments, see them through.
  4. Take your commitments seriously.
  5. Be open to new ideas and suggestions, and be ready to learn.
